Gallery 35: Paddling in the Czech republic.

The first pictures of the Kamenice trip in this gallery go with the Kamenice trip report I wrote. The others are from a trip two weeks later, with quite a bit lower water level. The pictures of the Mumlava, Ottava and Vltava are shot over the years.

The Octavia roofrack can hold five playboats, with room to spare (handy for the paddles or a sixth playboat).

Klara running the Vltava river near Lipno (Czech Republic), with more than the usual amount of water.
August 2001, Lipno, Czech Republic. For a few days the dam at Lipno lets off a lot of water, completely flushing the tiny creekbed with brown water. It's a really great run, especially if you can handle class III/IV big volume water in a very narrow river bed. Picture taken by Irena Zabka.
June 2002, Lipno, Czech Republic. Same rapid as the picture above, same line.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. The put in, Milos and Tomas. Milos would quickly be finding out that paddling with bare hands in this weather was not very smart.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. The whole group together, after Tomas, Milos and I had run the first rapids without Klara and Petra.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. Tomas, against a beautiful backdrop.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. Klara and Petra in an eddy. By now it was snowing so hard that looking into the wind was almost impossible.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. Even though I got splashed with water all the time, the snow collected on my red helmet and swimming vest.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. Klara and Petra in another eddy on the Ottava.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. From left to right: Klara, Milos, Tomas, Petra and me. By now it was snowing so hard that we're virtually unrecognisable through the snow.
Winter 2002, Ottava river, Czech Republic. Although we were only on the river for a little over an hour and a half, over five centimetres (two inches) of snow covered my car.
Winter 2002, Mumlava creek, Czech Republic. From left to right: Martin, Honza and Klara.
Winter 2002, Mumlava creek, Czech Republic. Klara sinking waist deep in the snow, at the put in to the creek.
Winter 2002, Mumlava creek, Czech Republic. Honza manages to get his paddle stuck under water, in one of the first rapids on the Mumlava.
Winter 2002, Mumlava creek, Czech Republic. And here he's retrieved it, after a very cold swim! :-)
Winter 2002, Mumlava creek, Czech Republic. Klara running a small rapid.
Winter 2002, Jizera creek, Czech Republic. Klara running another rapid.
Winter 2002, Jizera creek, Czech Republic. Honza, Klara and Martin standing at the top of the "Island Of Horror".
Winter 2002, Jizera creek, Czech Republic. Honza running the "Island Of Horror" rapid.
Winter 2002, Jizera creek, Czech Republic. Uh oh, Honza does it again! He managed to wedge his paddle under a rock somewhere once more, resulting in a swim.
Winter 2002, Jizera creek, Czech Republic. Honza wading to shore, just below the "Island Of Horror" rapid.
